It's been a weird day. I'll start off with last night, though. Let me preface by saying that when I started breastfeeding at the hospital, Little Bit was having trouble latching on, so the consultant gave me a "shield" to use. If you don't know what that is, it's basically a plastic nipple with an outer edge that I just put on me and that allows her to nurse. The consultant said that her mouth is probably just to small right now to latch on directly. Anyway, I decided to try last night to get her to latch on directly and she did! Okay, in saying this, I felt a sense of accomplishment and was really glad she was doing it "the natural way". Okay, anyway, last night was a tiring night. Little bit had trouble going to sleep and I got up 3 times with her and she pooed every time. It was nasty and time consuming. So, we took her to the pediatrician this morning for her weight check. She gained a 1/2 ounce which is better than nothing. OH, before I get to that....hubby and I were both exhausted this morning, so we got a late start and ended up being late...AGAIN...for our appt. As we were backing out of the driveway, I was on my cell phone calling the doctor to let them know we'd be late and I was in the backseat with Little bit. Hubby was distracted, I guess, and ended up backing into our neighbor's car that was parked on the street! I couldn't believe it! Since we were so late, we were going to go on and then talk to the neighbors when we got back. Well, as we pulled off down the street, hubby looked in the mirror and saw them come out and look at their car. Keep in mind it's an older car and wasn't in the best of shape. Well, we turned around and went back and hubby got out and explained to them we were late for the appt. and apologized, etc. They were really nice about it and said there was no damage. I got out and looked at the back of our car and surprisingly enough, we didn't have any damage to ours either! Thank the Lord!!!!!!!! So, we're already frazzled from being late and then we hit the neighbor's car! Grrr. So, we get to the doctor. I'm not sure if I told you this, but hubby had told me the nurses said Little bit was breach. Well, when I went to the doctor last Thursday, my OBGYN said she wasn't. Apparently the nurses thought she looked like she was. Well, when we told the pediatrician this, she said there was no need to have the ultrasound done. So, we're very relieved! She also said that since my milk came in, we should try leaving out the formula supplement and see how she does since she had spit up several times since last night. The doc thought she might be getting too much.
After the doctor, we went to Walmart. We needed several things. It was Little Bit's first trip to Walmart. I should have taken pictures! :) She slept the whole time, which was good. We haven't been able to find preemie diapers, but Walmart had them. They're so expensive!!! Hubby and I will probably start losing a lot of weight b/c we won't be able to buy groceries so that we can keep Little Bit in diapers! :) Anyway, we got home and I fed Little Bit. Hubby went over and talked to the neighbors again to make sure everything was okay. He felt so bad! They were fine, though.
*This is the hormonal segment of this journal*
So, this afternoon Little Bit would eat for a few minutes and fall asleep. I can't keep this child awake! I fed her almost every hour b/c then she'd wake up hungry a short while later. Well, hubby said maybe we should give her some formula. I finally agreed since she was getting fussy. Well, she took that right away and sucked it down. Hubby kept remarking how starving she must have been and that just set me off. I was in the kitchen cleaning up from dinner and started crying. It made me feel like a failure since I can't get her to eat until she's full. It's frustrating b/c the milk's there, but she just won't stay awake long enough to get full! Hubby felt so bad when he realized I was upset. I know it's about her needs, but I just wish I could get her to eat from me more! Any suggestions??? We have tried everything but dumping water on her!
On a more positive note, hubby keeps telling me how good I look. Shew!!! I just got sidetracked. Hubby's holding Little Bit and she has a stinky diaper. I can smell it over here on the couch. Yuck! Okay, well, that's about it. I really appreciate everyone's support and encouragement right now! It's still a huge adjustment! Oh, by the way, when I called Children's Hospital to cancel the ultrasound, I referred to Little Bit as "my daughter". How weird to say that for the first time!!!! Okay, I've "talked" your ear off enough. Josy, thanks for the gift! I don't have it yet, but I think HBM's bringing it by tomorrow. Sebbiedue, praying for you and tonight. Love you all and I can't wait to see all of you!!!!! It's killing me to be in hibernation right now, but Little Bit's well being has to come first.
Speedy out!

Hey! My doctor told me that if I gave Pita Pocket formula, then he would like that better because it was easier for him to eat from a bottle than from the breast. She will eat when she is ready. So, I would try to just keep her on the breast. She will end up eating realizing that she isn't going to get the formula. Just a thought! See ya tomorrow! Lots of Love!
That is great you don't have to stress over the ultrasound. I'll be praying for her to stay awake more and eat better. My Abbi alwyas slept a lot but Madison was a good eater. I am coming by with HBM tomorrow can't wait to see ya and little bit!!! LOVE YA
Absolutely :) That's great she doesn't have to have that ultrasound, and good peace of mind for you all :)
BTW, we're STILL adjusting, and Princess is almost 2!! LOL :) (((((HUGS))))))
Hey sista!!! This time is when Little Bit needs to "learn" how to eat out of the womb. Before she was just auto fed. Now she has to figure it out. She is falling asleep so much b/c she is so COMFORTABLE. This IS a good thing. The two of you need to work out what is going to happen. With Boo I just chalked up about a month that I was on constant feed. It also helped with the fussiness and no bink. After about 6 weeks she was even sleeping about 5 hours through the night. I would just give her and be at her beck and call. She was a great infant. Biggest thing here is that she is comfortable. She is touching skin to skin, she can hear your heart and body noises which is what she has heard for the last 9 months. It is calming and soothing to her. It does get better.
Also, make sure you are drinking like crazy. I always tried to down a big glass of water (should be water) every time Boo ate. This would insure that I would always have enough milk for her. Also you need to eat and even keep taking your prenatal vitamins. Sleep when she sleeps. That is a whole lot more important than cooking, cleaning and doing laundry. All that can get done in time. Make sure you get your rest. You will be a better mommy for it.
Sorry so much but this was probably the best advise I have for anything. This is what worked for me. Hope it helps.
Lots of Love.
(((((Sara))))) I wish I was there to give you a hug!!!
Some babies are just sleepy. Ideas to try are, in order by easiest to hardest:
Change her first to get her good and awake.
Keep her only in her diaper or a onsie so she's not so comfortably warm, not cold, but cool enough to keep her from dozing off.
Remove her from the breast while she's actively suckling so it'll annoy her enough to look for it. Doing that a few times got me through a full 20min session w/ CLW when she was jaundiced and sleeping all the time.
And lastly, when she falls asleep, wake her back up by changing her again, or removing her sleeper, or anything you can do to awaken her. I remember the nurse when I first had THing1 and we had that difficulty at the hospital, she grabbed her up and started dancing with her held at arms length and swaying and swinging until Thing1 started crying. It was stressful, but it woke her up enough to nurse!
Call me if you wanna talk or just cry to somebody who understands! Much love!!!
Yep, what Sebbie Due said. Joe was the biggest putz when it came to eating. Didn't matter the time of day, it was an hour of sitting and holding a bottle. Finally at about 3 weeks I called the dr. and that's what she said to do...turned an hour into 15 minutes really fast! Hugs girl, remember if this "hormonal" thing lasts longer than a few days, call your doc! Praying for you!
I have to say....hang in there!!! I can SOOOO TOTALLY relate to those feelings and that is exactly why I gave up trying to breast-feed FAB....so you don't do that! Hang in there!!! Another trick..that doesn't seem very nice but works...is to have a wet rag and put it on her forehead if she starts to fall asleep. That will wake her back up!!
Hang in there...you are an awesome Mommy!!!! Can't wait to see you!!
Love ya!
